Flowers Canada (Ontario) Ltd. recently launched the retail side of Pick
Ontario, a comprehensive marketing campaign intended to raise
awareness, interest and demand for Ontario-grown cut flowers and potted
plants. The organization is now in the process of informing retailers about
Pick Ontario and preparing for the consumer campaign that will follow
in the spring of 2008.
“Increasing numbers of people want to support their local economy by purchasing products grown in Ontario,” says Gary Gander, manager of Pick Ontario. ”Yet our market research shows that one in five people don’t know the origin of the flowers and potted plants they buy.”
The consumer side of Pick Ontario is set to launch in March around the time of Canada Blooms. Commercial advertising will be set up in support of the launch and Gander says they are planning to promote the campaign at the retail level through the use of POS material and materials to identify Ontario-grown products. He says he realizes that Ontario products may not replace all the imported floriculture products that are brought in, but the campaign will serve to highlight when consumers can make the choice to go local.
Pick Ontario is funded by The Ontario Greenhouse Alliance and the Agricultural Adaptation Council.
