The Society of American Florists recently released the
2007 Changing Floriculture Industry report, providing an overall look
at the U.S. floral industry. Some quick statistics from the report are:
• The floriculture industry was estimated at $19.4 billion in 2005 (up from $18 billion in 2001).
• Females dominate floral consumption at 78.6 per cent.
• Affluent empty nesters make up 20 per cent of flower and plant consumers.
• Couples with dual incomes and no children make the fewest flower purchases.
• Business to business transactions make up 15 to 20 per cent of a florist’s business.
• U.S. imports of fresh flowers are on the upswing – three billion in 2005, 2.8 billion in 2005.
• On Mother’s Day 2007, sales were up at 57 per cent of florists; less than a third reported a decline.
