Florist in the News

winnipeg_boldWinnipeg, Man. – Florists Supply’s 2007 Spring Design Show
Florists Supply hosted four design shows this March.  The shows were themed Make It Bold to emphasize designs that set retail florists apart.  These shows proved to be educational and motivational. The design tip that stood out most to customers was provided by Ralph Null, fellow, aifd, aaf, pfci, who showed off some very innovative uses for the standby ivy bowl, with the fluted edge.

He showed his audiences how they could prep these pieces by constructing armatures that incorporated the bowl with the use of curly willow, coloured aluminum wire, feathers, vine balls and more.  These could be prepared well ahead, whichmakes designing them a very quick trick.  It was remarkable
how a couple rose heads with a hydrangea bloom and suitable accents became a charming gift for any occasion.  Sometimes it’s not the big showy pieces that get remembered, but the profitable timesavers like these!

Florists Supply would like to thank all of the featured designers for providing an inspirational day of design:
• Inta Taurins, cafa
• Paul Jaras, aifd
• Ralph Null, fellow, aifd, aaf, pfci
• Sharon McGukin, aifd, pfci
• Derrick Hollar, aifd, cafa

Saskatoon, Sask. – CAFA in Tune with the Junos

Nelly Furtado says that after the friendly and warm reception by Saskatoon residents, what she will remember the most about the 2007 Junos are the marvellous flowers everywhere!

Commissioned by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to direct, chosen Saskatoon florist Flowers by Fred the Canadian Academy of Floral Art (cafa) flowered the Junos in grand style.  The CAFA team, led by Joel Marc Frappier, cafa, along with president Inta Taurins, cafa, and development committee member Rada Ristich, aifd, cafa,  joined Saskatoon native Fred Chlan, aifd, cafa, to flower the Junos Saskatoon-style.  Over 200 floral conceptions were prepared to embellish the various spaces and events that made up the 2007 Juno Awards.

Niagara Falls, Ont. – NIAF Hosts Annual Design Show
The Niagara International Association of Florists hosted its 62nd annual design school and seminar in late March. Approximately 200 florists from Ontario, Pennsylvania and upstate New York were treated to a weekend of networking and emerging floral trends.

Designer Sharon McGukin, aifd, of Atlanta, Ga., evoked lots of “oohs” and “aahs” with her long-flowing vertical bridal arrangements and wealth of knowledge on current trends and floral retailing in general.

The Niagara International Association of Florists is an independent board that was formed after the demise of FTD as a member-owned company and the breakup of the FTD districts. Board membership is open to Canadian and American retail shop owners and managers with a commitment to the education of their fellow florists. The association is grateful for the support of Teleflora, FTD and Bloomnet.

Florists in the News – Montreal
A trend to watch: “Fair trade” flowers are making inroads into the Quebec floral market. The Quebec media have been active in the reporting of the social and environmental practices of South American growers. As a result of these awareness campaigns, florists report that their customers are now asking where their flowers are coming from. The Quebec florists who support this program are:

•     A la Boîte à Fleurs, Laval
•     Ambiance Fleuriste, Sherbrooke
•     Archer Florist, Ste. Foy
•     Au Cachet Fleuri, Longeuil
•     Beau-port Fleuriste, Beauport
•     Fleuriste Centre-Ville, Montreal
•     Fleurs & Compagnies, Laval
•     Fleuriste Salaberry, St. Laurent
•     Création Bouquelle in Charlesbourg and Val Bélair.

And, the wholesalers committed to supplying them:
•     Fleurigros, Ste. Foy
•     Club Floral, Boisbriand
•     Les Serres Rougemont, Granby
•     Fleurs Expert, St. Laurent
•     Fleurs coupées Chicoutimi Inc., Chicoutimi

“The Clock” - Montreal
For the first time in the history of Marché Floral imported roses are being auctioned, where formerly no imports were allowed. The Marché’s new mission is to respond to market demands and needs and bring about a “one-stop shopping” concept. According to inside sources, Marché Floral has tripled its import sales in 11-1/2 years, and that is only the beginning.

Montreal Gardeners’ & Florists’ Club
Emery Chan, one of the oldest members of the Montreal Gardeners’ & Florists’ Club, recently turned 100. Emery, accompanied by his daughter, paid a surprise visit to his old friend, Dirk Van Egmond, of Edgewood Greenhouses.

The Club’s first General Meeting of the year was hosted by Udo Paulig, formerly of Flora Park, at the Casa Grec Restaurant in Dollard on March 6. The new format, reducing six meetings a year to only three, was well executed, and was appreciated by the 32 persons in attendance. The next GM will be held in September.

The Montreal Gardeners’ & Florists’ Club will be celebrating the 120th anniversary of its 1887 founding in November of this year. The New York Florists’ Club also established in the same year, terminated its activities in 1993, making the Montreal Gardeners’ & Florists’ Club the oldest Club of its genre in North America.

After 10 years, the Historic Committee have retrieved all the remaining MGFC documents from damp greenhouse storage and forgotten florists’ files from 1887 to this day, and with the collaboration of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, where all the copies of Canadian Florist magazine from 1905 forward are being stored, articles on the MGFC have been selected and copied.

All these documents will be part and parcel of a series of 15 bound volumes, each volume accompanied by its own ISBN number. One collection series will be given to Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa, and another copy of the series will be donated to McGill University’s Macdonald College of Horticulture Library in Ste. Anne de Bellevue to commemorate this historic milestone. After an appeal for sponsor funding, the response was immediate, and the publishing project is now a work-in-progress.

Joel Marc Frappier has definitely warned the fashion
industry that Haute Floral Couture is his signature!

Gatineau, Que. – Montreal Fashion Week
Fashion designers from Quebec and abroad  presented their fall and winter 2008 collections to the major industry leaders during Montreal Fashion Week in March.

Patrice Suko a Quebec fashion designer, presented his new men’s collection in conjunction with floral designer Joel Marc Frappier, cafa.  Twelve pieces were proudly paraded with great pomp and pageantry.

Joel Marc dressed the mannequins with floral elements that bridged leather with metal and red roses, everything to bring an elegant and vibrant touch to the Soku line.
