CBC’s Elizabeth Gray interviewed the author for the radio program The Current, which aired on March 9, 2007. The program discussed at length how imported flowers – in particular, roses – have been bred to have no scent, but failed to point out that there are fragrant flowers available from local growers. Also featured on the show was Nora Firm of the International Labour Rights Fund on Fairness and Flowers, and Dr. Irwin Smith, executive director of Flowers Canada Growers. Firm spoke of harsh working conditions in Ecuador, rashes, and women suffering rights violations. Dr. Smith praised the high quality of Canadian cut flowers, saying, “Canadian cut flowers are easy to sell, they’re just not identified.” He suggested that consumers might see labels coming in the future to designate Ontario and Canadian-grown products.
