Canadian Florist Represents North America in the International Annual of Floral Art 05/06
The brand-new publication International Annual of Floral Art 05/06 aims to showcase innovative floral art from around the world. Stichting Kunstboek Publishers received more than 600 entries. From these, an international jury specializing in the floral industry chose 200 floral arrangements by 106 floral artists from 22 countries. The judges selected those compositions that best represent the craftsmanship, aesthetics and innovation in today’s world of floristry.
Anne Leeson AIFD, CAFA from Ontario, was the only Canadian florist to be included in the book. In fact, she was the only floral designer from North America to be selected.
“The submissions from floral designers for the book were by invitation only,” says Leeson. “You have to make the time and effort to do something like this. It takes a great deal of commitment.”
Leeson arranged to have her designs photographed by Terry Robertson of Bochsler Photo Imaging in Burlington, Ont. To save wear and tear from transporting her arrangements, she spent the day in the studio doing her design work, as Robertson photographed them.
“When I look at the panel of judges, I’m very honoured that they chose my work. They are very talented, world renowned designers.”
When the publishers of International Annual of Floral Art 05/06 contacted Lesson to inform her that one of her four entries was going to be included in the book, she was thrilled. Then they contacted her again to ask if they could include a second entry – Leeson was ecstatic.
“It was hard to know what the judges were looking for. It’s a little different because it’s art, not necessarily floral design as we call it. They interpret the designs more liberally than we do. After seeing the book, I see what they’re trying to do – it truly is art,” Leeson says.
Leeson has been invited to submit designs for the next issue of the book and says she probably will.
“I was so thrilled to be included in 05/06. The book is filled with very talented people from around the world and it was an honour to be among them.”
