The 2005 CAFA Design Show and Induction
A successful and exciting CAFA Induction and Design Show took place in September at the Latvian Cultural Centre in Toronto.  Culinary CAFA, the theme of the design show, was related to food, cooking and indulgence, which inspired a visual feast of elaborate and scrumptious creations.

The reception began with a welcome from the president, Maija Asaris, and the presentation of the President’s Award, which is given to an individual who has given the CAFA organization tremendous support and acknowledgement. This year’s winner was Lisa Heuving from Westbrook Floral Ltd.

The Culinary CAFA show began with the Buffet Florals’ ‘Feast for the King.’  A collection of delectable dishes were brought out on stage to create an elaborate display. The designers responsible for this conception were Rada Ristich CAFA, Donna Gleeson AIFD, CAFA, Glendora Blake CAFA, and Marianne Suess AIFD, CAFA.

Next on the agenda was the ‘Sushi Platter’ designed by Inta Taurins CAFA and Brad Higginson CAFA. This presentation arrived in an exotic fashion. A Japanese Geisha was carried on a platter surrounded with the colourful individual Sushi dishes. This very dramatic and effective entrance created a real buzz in the audience.

The Tabletop Designs followed and this segment began with presentation of a scrumptious ‘Baked Alaska’ by Patricia Patrick AIFD, CAFA with the materials sponsored by CMC Cope Marketing Concepts by. Tall copper tubing with lights and cream coloured callas towered over the design. ‘Sherbets and Sorbets’ by Anne Leeson AIFD, CAFA and Pam Salisbury AIFD, CAFA presented a fabulous conception of oranges, hot pinks and lime green, with lots of glass and coloured floral foam powder, which certainly invited one to go over and taste the fresh and sparkling look of the theme. ‘Jello’ in all flavours and colours was represented by Maija Asaris AIFD,CAFA and Inta Taurins CAFA.

A Sultan’s tent of red roses and hanging lanterns was artistically represented by Derrick Foss CAFA and Evelyn Baker CAFA, with the theme of  ‘Turkish Delight.’ Vera Busko CAFA and Bob Newton AAF, AIFD, CAFA treated the audience to a fantasy of sugared roses and fruits hanging from bare branches of a tree, selecting the theme ‘Candy Apples.’ And finally ‘Strawberry Fantasia’ was presented by Glen Fidler AIFD, CAFA, who covered himself in strawberries, roses, Proteas and wonderful accessories to create his berry fantasy.  These stunning tabletop designs were the highlight of the evening and they created a great deal of interest in new design techniques, which were closely inspected by the audience after the show.

The evening concluded with the announcement of the People’s Choice Awards.  The audience chose from 15 static designs displayed in the gallery. The chosen winners were Rada Ristich’s ‘Tequila Sunrise,’  Patricia Patrick’s ‘Mint Julep,’ Bob Newton’s ‘Black Russian’ and Susanne Carlascio’s ‘Strawberry Daiquiri.’  The prizes were sponsored by Smithers-Oasis, Waterdale, Hoflands and Westbrook.

As the lights went down, another CAFA show came to an end.  Shows like this require a tremendous amount of time and dedication from the organizers, the participants, and the sponsors. Design shows offer the perfect venue to inspire the audience and share new ideas and techniques.  They also help nurture a deep commitment and passion for the floral industry.  The CAFA board is already planning for 2006 and it promises to be an exciting year.  For more information about CAFA, visit www.cafachat.com or call (800) 698-0113.
