Making a Difference on Valentine’s Day
John G. Hofland Ltd. in Mississauga, Ont. has been trying to make a difference with several charitable organizations, with the help of the company’s employees for several years now.
An advocate for World Vision, employees were encouraged to sponsor a child and the company would then match the sponsorship - together, they sponsor 100 children.
Now, Hofland is focusing on encouraging the floral industry to unite by creating a fundraiser for Valentine’s Day, where all levels of the floral industry can contribute and make a difference for children in Africa. In partnership with World Vision, the floral industry event will provide support, education, and care for orphans and vulnerable children in HIV/AIDS affected communities in Africa. Although still in the preliminary planning stages, Hofland hopes to get growers, wholesalers, and florists to donate a portion of the proceeds from roses sold on Valentine’s Day. At the retail level, consumers will be informed about the endeavourer of the floral industry and encouraged to contribute. Participating florists will receive promotional material including enclosure cards to carry the message to the receiver of the roses.
For more information or to participate in the event contact a Hofland flower sales rep at (800) 387-6760 or Maria Drossos of World Vision Canada at (877) 554-5219 or

Promoting Flowers at the Royal Winter Agricultural Fair
A joint effort by Flowers Canada Ontario and Ontario Flower Growers Cooperative with the support of TOGA culminated in the presentation of a booth at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto in November. This was an opportunity to showcase the many varieties of flowers grown in Ontario, to educate consumers about the Ontario flower industry, and to promote the sale of Ontario floral products.

Floral Wholesaler Making a Difference
North West Wholesale Florists Ltd. in Burnaby, B.C. is dedicated to providing exceptional floral value to their customers. North West also donates a portion of the company’s profits to support children and their families in Third World countries. One such project is the ‘World’s Largest Tape Ball.’ Ryan Funk, an 11-year-old hockey player who had been rolling his used hockey tape into a ball, approached his father Tim Funk, president of North West Wholesale Florist, about collecting the tape. They contacted Guinness World Records and learned they could set a world record for the world’s largest tape ball, while raising money for Third World orphans at the same time.
The goal of the project is to raise $1 million in donations and to surpass the current world record of 80 lbs. held by an American from Florida.
“We have an experienced Board of Directors that are donating their time, resources and contacts to ensure that this project succeeds,” says Tim Funk. “We are a group of company presidents that believe that this is one of the greatest opportunities for us to put our energy into a project that will change the lives of thousands of orphaned children. We are committed to its success, and will encourage our peers and business associates to also get involved.”
