For this month’s edition of Amanda’s Top Ten, I searched the web and flipped through consumer wedding magazines to compile a list of the hot wedding trends for 2008.
1. Eco-friendly weddings – This trend was big last year and it continues on into 2008. Couples are looking for organic and local flowers and keeping the environment in mind when planning for the big day. Recycled items are also becoming more popular for things like wedding favours.
2. Spring into yellow – Yellow was a big hit on the 2008 fashion runways and will likely brighten up the wedding aisle this year too. Yellow can be paired with white for day weddings and combined with chocolate brown or silvery grey for evening nuptials.
3. metal – Silver and steel grey are two more colours gracing bridesmaids this year. The hue also works well as a décor accent and can be used on linens and stationery. The fashion-savvy are predicting that grey will soon replace chocolate brown as the “in” colour.
4. Go bold – Bright and bold jewel tones like plum purples, azalea pinks and emerald greens are the perfect accent to cream or grey.
5. Down to the details – Brides are paying close attention to even the tiniest of details and chair covers are no exception. Expect requests for covers that are shiny, dramatic and feature bold colours and patterns.
6. Pots to go – Potted plants and potted seedlings are becoming the
perfect decoration and keepsake for wedding ceremonies. Guests can take the pots home and transplant them in their gardens or backyards.
7. Doubling up – The bride who wants the best of both worlds is now incorporating this into her wedding. Many are planning a wardrobe and hairstyle switch-up between the ceremony and the reception. The décor can also experience a revamp – as the night rolls on, the accent colours could intensify and deepen from the wedding to reception.
8. Indulge – Bigger is better when it comes to floral arrangements and centrepieces. Flowers go from just an accent to centre stage and incorporate candles, petals and even feathers. Long elegant tables brimming with fresh flowers and dramatic greenery are popular for 2008.
9. Not just for tables – Flowers can be found throughout the reception hall – on the stage next to the band, along the bar and right alongside the food. Floral also makes an appearance via graphics on the invitations, menu cards or decals painted on the dance floor.
10. Home sweet home – Couples are looking to exchange vows from the comfort of their (or their family and friends’) homes. This one-of-a-kind wedding takes a lot of planning (think tents, décor, caterers, etc.) but can lead to a more personalized event.
