Retail stores are becoming more aware of utilizing an open concept with their traffic patterns and layouts. With this new trend, it’s important to be aware of several challenges, if we’re going to make any kind of impact in our store displays.
Have you ever walked in a store only to see a chaotic mess? Everything from the front window to the back corner of the store can be seen in one glance. What is your first impression of this type of layout?
It’s distracting, it’s messy, and most of all it’s uninviting. As a customer, I want to feel comfortable in the store, and I want the displays to be part of the buying experience. Well-merchandised displays should communicate a message, and welcome the customer to interact with the products. If all the customer sees is clutter, you’ve lost their interest and business.
A backdrop allows you to set the stage for your product and create a concentrated visual area for customers.
The options for backdrops are endless and they can be quite inexpensive in comparison to the impact they will provide to your store. Backdrops can be draped fabric or decorative poster boards suspended from the ceiling.
For Valentine’s Day try these:
• a partition of feathered boas
• heart garlands
• an old, painted door
• a suspended window frame

One of the most effective ways to avoid this scenario is to create foundation displays, using backdrops with complimentary colours. This will allow the eye to stay focused on products in the display, instead of allowing the eye to travel to the rest of the store. A backdrop allows you to set the stage for your product and create a concentrated visual area for customers.
With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, I think it’s important to plan your displays ahead of time. It’s also important to utilize all of your available space. I often see stores merchandising in the first 3 to 6 feet of the front entrance. This is the main sight line for many people, but you’re paying for every square inch of your space, so why not make full use of it. By incorporating backdrops into your store displays, you will be able to draw the eye to a larger display area. This will allow you to merchandise at several new levels to maximize your impact and increase your sales.
