Commitment. That’s what it took for the Horticultural Publishing Company Ltd., to launch The Canadian Florist, and that’s what it takes to have a sustainable retail floral trade in 2005. It takes the commitment of all the players in the industry, the founders and builders, the students and educators, the designers and managers, plus the growers and wholesalers, distributors and services. All have a role to play in making sure that more flowers get into more consumer hands, more often and with more creativity everyday. A special edition such as this allows us, the communicators, to showcase them all working together.
The work in front of you is an overview of the Canadian floral industry as seen through the eyes of the past editors and publishers of Canadian Florist. Featured on the pages are the names, and in some cases faces, of the people who have made a name for themselves through their dedication and commitment to this both rewarding and challenging industry.
We acknowledge that this is in no way a complete history of the last 100 years of retail floriculture in Canada. There will be many committed individuals whose names are missing, through lack of information, space or just resources. We deeply regret not being able to include them all.
In closing, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Anja for her commitment to the task of reviewing 100 years of back issues of Canadian Florist, and pulling out the tidbits of information that make up the ensuing pages. Rest assured that we are also committed to making sure that the next editor and publisher who have the opportunity to put together a special anniversary issue of Canadian Florist will also have good copy to draw from.
