Coast to Coast

FTD® Rings in 2005 with Heart
5FTD celebrated the New Year with their 52nd year at the 2005 Rose Parade® through a breathtaking float ‘Garden of Dreams,’ which was viewed by more than 250 million people in 150 countries around the world. On January 1, 2005, FTD was awarded the Isabella Coleman Trophy for the best presentation of colour and colour harmony through floral use of their Rose Parade float entry.

This magnificent float featured a mystical dreamland donned with the widest variety of springtime flowers ever seen on a Rose Parade float – more than 40 varieties from six continents. The abundant gardens overflowed with tulips, daffodils, iris, tuberose, forsythia, lily of the valley, calla lilies, hydrangea, peony, delphinium, alstroemeria, snapdragon, bouvardia, freesia, nerine lily, hiburnum and larkspur. Plus, FTD unveiled a new variety of rose – a vibrant pink called ‘passion’ – on the 2005 float entry.

More than 8,000 solid clusters of liatris bring the sculpted thistles to life, while coconut flakes shape the daisies and dehydrated carrot creates orange oriental lilies. In the gardens, mystical sprites selected beautiful bouquets of fresh-cut flowers and were dressed in combinations of leaves and mosses, which help highlight intricate details of succulents, skeleton leaves, hydrangea florets, strings of pearl, crown flowers and clusters of fresh smelling gardenias. Their gentle wings came to life with luminous lunaria.

DC Duby Wild Sweets Launches Spring 2005 Chocolate Collection
Canadian chocolatiers, Dominique and Cindy Duby announced the launch of the spring ‘Wild Sweets Aroma Collection.’ The collections are each a specially packaged assortment of individual chocolates presented in a sleek custom-created chestnut-brown coloured gift box, available in 12 or 20 pieces. The collections will be available on a limited release basis at select stores in North America and through the DC Duby Wild Sweets Virtual Boutique, just in time for the 2005 spring pre-orders for both Valentine’s and Mother’s Day.

The Dubys’ new collections are the culmination of months of research and development in collaboration with food and wine scientists. Their production method is heavily based on ‘molecular gastronomy’ or the application of scientific principles and techniques to small-scale artisan food productions. One of the Dubys’ ongoing special interests is the understanding of flavour combinations, and why certain flavours go well together or not.

“We think of flavours as an orchestra,” says Dominique Duby. “One or two flavours are the lead instruments, while others are supporting players. Our goal is not to create a cacophony of flavours, but rather a pleasing melody.”

The Wild Sweets Aroma Collection is based on the Systematic Odour Classification Groups and specifically the ABC’s© of perfumery, which are used to describe and classify aromas.
