Calling All Florists Young and Old

With 2005 well underway, we at Canadian Florist Magazine have been busy planning our 100th anniversary issue. Wearing cloth gloves to protect the aged papers from the oils in our skin, we’ve been making frequent visits to the library at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Ontario, to read through the archives of Canadian Florist.  Researching one hundred years of the floriculture industry has been a fascinating journey through history, and although times have changed, florists today are dealing with issues similar to the ones florists dealt with since 1904. Managing a business, competition, design trends, store displays, supply and demand issues, holiday trends, dealing with perishable products, all of these were and still are concerns of florists across Canada.

Celebrating 100 years of publishing is a huge milestone, and it would not have been possible without our advertisers, readers, and the industry itself. The October Anniversary issue is going to be a retrospective look at the history of the magazine, how the industry evolved, what trends have come and gone, familiar faces that helped build the floriculture industry to what it is today, and a glance at what the future holds.

If you own or work in a flower shop that has been in business for fifty years or longer, we would like to encourage you to share your story with us, so that we can share it with the rest of Canadian Florist’s readers. If you have tidbits of information on the history of the industry, photographs, or delightful stories of days gone by, please don’t hesitate to e-mail or telephone us. This issue will be a captivating journey through the past one hundred years of the magazine and industry, and with your help, we can be certain that we won’t overlook anything. After all, this milestone only comes around every one hundred years!

I would also like to introduce Michelle Brisebois, Canadian Florist Magazine’s new columnist. Michelle is a marketing professional with experience in the food, pharmaceutical and financial services industries. She will be offering business-oriented articles to help you with your continued success as a business owner. If you have any topics or questions you would like Michelle to address in future articles on running a small business, please let me know.
