A Chicago florist recently
launched a green campaign that encourages customers to bring vases and
containers into the shop to receive a green plant and a charitable
donation made on their behalf.
“One of the things
we hear is that people have vases, baskets or ceramics from flowers
they have received piling up in their basements, under their sinks, in
closets… and they feel guilty just throwing them out,” says Bill
Sheffield, president and owner, in a news release on the shop's website. “It’s time to help out and get these
glass, wicker and ceramic containers reused or recycled! So, in
exchange for people turning in their old stuff, we’re giving out green
plants to bring more ‘green’ into homes. Plus, we wanted to do more,
so we’re making financial ‘green’ donations to important local
organizations.”
Through until August, customer can drop off any glass, ceramic or wicker containers at any of the florist's six locations. For every five reusable containers donated, the customer receives a free green plant and will have a $3 donation made in their name to a local charity.
The florist plans to evaluate each donated container to see if it can be reused in the shops and if it's not possible to reuse a container, it will be recycled.
