Relief on the way for B.C. small businesses
Written by Amanda Ryder
Retail Council of Canada (RCC) and its thousands of members across British Columbia applaud the provincial government for their support of B.C. small business in a new economic plan announced by Premier Gordon Campbell.

The Province's 10-point plan aims to provide relief for families and small businesses. Several measures affecting small and independent retailers include:
  • Accelerated tax relief for small business - savings to small business will be $146 million over three years.
  • The Province will double the commission it pays business for collecting the provincial sales tax and hotel room tax. It will provide more than 100,000 businesses with approximately $60 million over three years and add up to $1,200 to a business's bottom line.
"In today's turbulent economy, the small businesses at the heart of BC communities are feeling the strain," says Max Logan, BC Director, RCC. "Our small and independent retailers are encouraged by the immediate actions of the provincial government to alleviate some of the pressure and help BC small businesses remain competitive."

There are approximately 30,000 retail establishments in British Columbia, with 2007 sales that approached $60 billion - most of which are small and independent businesses. The retail sector is the province's number one employer. RCC views the B.C. Government's economic plan as a step in the right direction to ensure the sustainability and future prosperity of this important part of the province's economy.
