The 3/50 project looks out for independents
Written by Amanda Ryder
A new website and program launched in the U.S. is encouraging consumers to save their local economy, three stores at a time.

The 3/50 Project asks people to consider what three independently owned businesses in their community they would miss if these businesses disappeared. Next, the website encourages shoppers to spend a total of $50 a month in locally owned independent businesses (the three they picked or any local independent) to support the community.

Based on U.S. numbers, if 50 per cent of the population followed this idea, the 3/50 Project would generate $42.6 billion in revenue for local businesses in the country. For every $100 spent in independently owned stores, $68 of it returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If the same amount is spent in a national chain, only $43 stays in the community.

The website and program has attracted retailers in both the U.S. and Canada to take part and help save their fellow independents. You can become a supporter of the project by visiting the350project.net. Here you can download a free flyer to hand out to customers as well as store visuals like a countertop sign, website graphic or window banner.
