Quebec florist to compete for Team Canada

Elisa Paquet-Lessard of Quebec City will be representing Canada at the 40th 2009 World Skills Competition when it comes to Calgary this Sept. 1-7. The florist is a graduate of the Centre de la Formation Professionelle Fierbourg in Quebec where she received her diploma in floristry.

elisa1In the past year, Paquet-Lessard has competed and won the regional, provincial and national Skills Canada competitions to and is now ready to face 18 competitors from around the world. She says she’s looking forward to representing the industry on a world stage. “By attending and competing at the WorldSkills Competition, I want to show that the Canadian florist industry has potential and is a trade to be proud of.”

Paquet-Lessard is spending the months leading up to the competition perfecting her techniques at school and working part-time at Atelier Fleuriste Dumont in Quebec. The WorldSkills Competition will span four-days and require the florist to design 10-12 arrangements.

When it comes to her favourite design styles, the florists prefers bridal designs and hand-tied bouquets because of the intricate work required. “My strengths are in the details and in the structures,” says Paquet-Lessard.
