Australian designer wows at Toronto Botanical Gardens
Written by Marianne Suess, AIFD, CAFA
markpampling4Mark Pampling, an international designer from Australia presented a spectacular floral design program at the Toronto Botanical Gardens in May. The Milne House Garden Club sponsored the event.

Pampling is fond of different and intricate textures. One of his designs was created on a board covered with cut out tiles of sand paper, which then became his display surface. In the same design he rolled coco fiber into individual coils and secured the shape with copper-coloured decorative wire. These coils were then arranged to form a container. It was a fabulous structure by itself without the addition of floral materials. Pampling completed the design with using chartreuse-coloured cymbidiums and mums and contrasted them with deep red roses and carnations, creating a stunning colour combination.

Another one of his favourite design materials he used was chicken wire, which he cut and moulded into the most interesting shapes and made containers out of them. One of the designs he presented was a very flat stone-like shape in which he then covered with weaving bear grass through the spaces. A small opening provided the space for the florals, which among other materials contained green apples. To sum it all up: beautiful work, instructive commentary and a real treat!
