Reviewing your staff
Written by Amanda Ryder
Your staff is both the face of your business and an essential part of the engine that keeps it running. These employees are also human - they make mistakes, run into problems and may require new training or might be ready to take on a new position.

Do you conduct performance reviews with your staff? Do you give them feedback on their working habits? Why or why not? How do you critique your employees (both positively and negatively)?

I do performance reviews as an ongoing basis. I have this review broken down into categories:

sales and customer relations
floral design
housekeeping
store display and maintenance
overall performance

Then I just rate them on a scale of 1 to 5, providing some comments along with each.

I don’t do set performance reviews at set times but I will do the randomly when I feel the need.

I always give my staff feedback on how they are performing for the day, I love to compliant my staff on a beautiful designed brides bouquet, corsage or every day flowers. I think positive reinforcement is the best way to lead your staff in the direction you want your business to go. My staff have told me that a complement any think less then wonderful, fantastic, looks amazing, they know something need changing in the flowers. With positive critique you can help a designer learn and not make them feel scared to experiment and find their own style.

Any time I need to have a talk with an employee about something negative I will take the staff out of the store and do it in private and talk to the staff about what is going on and why. I do ask my staff in small groups how they are feeling, and how they think things are going in the store. I usually get a lot of feedback, and find out any problems that may be underlying. I really take to heart what they share with we and try to implement new ideas they share.

I have a staff of 7 at my store. It is very important to know what is going on with the ladies and how they are working together.
