Nov. 26, 2009 - A controversy is brewing in the second-largest U.S.
state. A local pastor is attacking a long-standing tradition and
product designed by florists - homecoming mums - calling them a waste of money.
Each year, Texas high school students wear these homecoming mums, which are a combination of ribbons, stuffed animals, artificial flowers, feathers, photos, to name a few materials, and often purchase the homecoming mum from their local florist. Cindy Ryan, a local pastor and writer, wrote into the local newspaper, proclaiming that "Each outrageous mum represented to me 33 hungry children who could be fed for a month" and asked students and parents to stop buying them.
