Dec. 22, 2009 - In October, Alta Vista Flowers, one of Ottawa’s oldest flower shops presented “Florissage,” an event to celebrate the marriage of flowers and art.
For the event, the whole flower shop was transformed into a woodland atmosphere, tree branches, mosses and driftwood set the scene for the “Art of Nature” theme. Each one of the floral art pieces contained a natural element or made a symbolic statement of nature with flowers as the art medium. The area that normally would be the flower shop “processing room and packing bench” became the thematic storyboard that illustrated the natural devastation of flood, drought and fire using flowers. Mother Nature also made an appearance in the form of gorgeous gown, which took 16 hours to create and was made of aspidistra leaves, accented with a flowing train of variegated pittosporum and adorned with white cymbidium and dendrobium orchids. The dress was appropriate worn the week following the Florissage to a masquerade gala dinner for the Weekend to End Cancer.
The event was a success and attracted over 60 guests who sipped wine, nibbled on canapés and enjoyed what can be done with inspiration from the elements of the Canadian landscape and touches of human creativity.
“Floral designers express their artistic talents with flowers as their medium. I think it is important to elevate the perception that they are artists. This type of event should be more commonplace” says Karen LeRoy, co-owner and floral designer at Alta Vista Flowers.
