Feb. 26, 2010 - Now that you've had time to recover from Valentine's Day, how did this year's occasion rate? Were sales figures better than last year or were your numbers down? How did the fact that it fell on Sunday affect your shop? What did you do to entice those early shoppers?

This was our first Valentine's day. Friday was good, lots of roses sold. Saturday we were ready for a big rush which never really came. It was steady enough, but not as good as we'd hoped. We opened on Sunday since we had a lot of flowers left, and it was worthwhile opening for the three hours we were here.

Our store is in a small town, but Regina is very close. All the florists I spoke with in Regina reported a similar experience to mine.

My honey Sean was a hit with the ladies who were looking for gifts for their guys! :)

I liked the idea of steady business starting from Wednesday. Sunday was definitely very slow but overall considering did not have much wastage and less staff cost, it was not so bad. A little down from last year.

Sales were down considerably from 2009 but almost exactly the same as the last Sunday Valentines in '99. I kept staff and expenses in line with expectations and sold all but 1 rose!
Not sure if Family Day impacted sales (closed on Monday) or if it was the "usual" reasons for lower Sunday sales. Sunday was steady with orders. Hope 2011 is better!

We sent out an email blast promising a free small box of chocolates with every Valentine delivery on the 10th to 13th. Our sales were down about 20% as expected, but purchases & wages were reduced as well, so the bottom line was good. It was a not-too-stressful holiday.

We where up 20 percent from last year, (keeping in mind the weather was terrible last year, and kind of great this year.)

Things that didn't sell for us where typical Valentines planters (2 X 4" roses in a tin pot, etc.) Roses still sell really well, closely followed by tulips and gerbs.

Friday and Saturday were busier than Sunday this year, with the line-up starting at 7:30 am, (store opened at 7)

Our delivery service had a very slow Valentines because of it falling on the Sunday, as people delivered their own flowers rather than having them delivered to their sweeties work place.

Thank you so much! Kristina

This year Valentines was a three day event for our store. Friday was busy with business delivery. Sat. was a fabulous walk in day and Sunday was even better. We are a 7 day store, and all our customers knew we would be open Sunday. 2.4 percent better than last year...

I found that Valentine's was really good. Friday and Saturday were great, with Sunday being mostly pickup orders. I did very well considering I am a new store and had only been opened for 3 weeks prior to Valentine's. Can't wait to see what next year is like!!

Spread over three days. Sunday was very poor, Friday good, and Saturday steady. We called all last year's customers and mailed cards out. Sales were down 20%. This seems to be the norm in TO town. We got on the Global News show at 6:00pm Feb 14th. I spoke on camera - cool. Bob Hatcher, Feb 26 2010

With Valentine's Day being on the weekend I believe that most guys have more of an opportunity to take their wives/girlfriends out to dinner than ordering flowers. I feel when they are working through the week they like to order flowers and have them sent to their spouses work, so in saying that, overall our Valentines was a little less than two years ago. Looking forward to seeing what Valentines 2011 will bring.

Since it was a Sunday, it was busy all weekend, but quieter on Sunday, the 14th. Overall, we made a little less than last year. I have the feeling that we were so prepared that it went by easily. And like every year, we had a lot of fun, with family and friends coming to give us a hand!
(sorry about my English, I'm from Lachute, Québec!)
