May 12, 2010 - In the May 2010 issue of Canadian Florist, we spoke to three members of the bridal industry about the larger trends that are happening in the sector. We also found out what colours will be on trend with brides this year and next year. Here’s a look at what they’re predicting.

Roseanne Dela Rosa, associate editor of Weddingbells magazine says for 2010, turquoise is a huge hue hit. It’s not a colour that’s used alone – expect to see the shade combined with unique colour combinations like orange, pink or even red. Moving forward to 2011, Dela Rosa is forecasting that purple will take the number one spot. “I see purple as being a major shade for 2011 and not just deep purple – I see light purple and lavender. Pink is another one – hot pink, light pink and baby pink.”

Margarite Raposo of Nice Stems in Toronto, gave these predictions: “Purples

are still very popular and creams white and greens are always a safe choice as it goes well with most venues. Using silver, gold, pewter containers for centerpieces are making a coming back.”

When asked what her colour forecast was, Sharon McGukin, AIFD, AAF, PFCI, design director of Smithers Oasis, breaks down the hot hues into themes.

In the going green theme, McGukin says crisp greens and whites will be popular when combined with chocolates and buttercreams. The next category is 70s chic, which she describes as “a monochromatic timeless look…that works through from creams to coppers and covers the yellows to golds.” McGukin says yellows are strong this year and that’s helped to boost the popularity of that particular theme.

Pantone’s colour pick of the year, turquoise  falls under the juicy fruit collection where the shade teams up with other bright, eye, popping colours. Last but not least is the modern tropics theme. “We are seeing a lot of the purples and the duller greens mixed in with greys and chocolate brown – it’s sort of an upscale, exotic look,” says McGukin. When it comes to purple, she’s agrees with other interviewees about the colour’s potential. “Purple is the rage in Paris right now. We are going to be doing just more and more with purple so it’s heavy on the incoming colour.”

McGukin’s predictions are based on her own industry experience and industry reports. One such report is the Wedding Color Trends 2010 Report, put together by the U.S. Color Association and the American Floral Trends Forecast. Here’s a look at the colour categories they’ve created:
