Perfect for a baby shower or hospital delivery

Written by Kara Johnston
Kara Johnston, cafa, attended the retail floristry program at Humber College and was greatly influenced by her instructors. Returning home to Temiskaming Shores, Ont., Kara opened her own flower shop at the age of 20. Ten years later, after her wedding business (including full décor and rentals) had grown significantly, Kara sold her shop to focus solely on a new business under the name of “Kara’s Touch Wedding Florals and Décor.” In October 2009, she was inducted into CAFA and looks forward to working with and learning from its many esteemed members.

For this portfolio, Kara created baby arrangements perfect for a baby shower or hospital delivery. She demonstrates that there are many options in keepsakes as well as using the traditional roses and carnations in fun, unique ways. Happy “Birth” Day is her high-end design.

‘Quack Quack Duck’
There are few images that can compare with the humble, inexpensive, yellow rubber ducky. Perfect for a boy or girl, this arrangement is taken out of the vase to make room for mama duck. Bright yellow gerberas – the hottest flower for the under-30 crowd – are really showcased in the orb. Forest green accents in the pearl pin gerbera centres and ribbon-wrapped dowelling allow both the flowers and ducks to stand out.

Happy ‘Birth’ Day
For the new baby’s one true birth day, this design features alternating layers of a diaper cake and monochromatic pink floral tiers. Its mixture of traditional carnations and roses as well as more modern florals such as callas, almond blossoms and lisianthus, make this design a beautiful gift from grandparents or a proud dad, and the organic, biodegradable diapers will make Mom feel good too!

Whooo’s the New Arrival?
Including a plush toy can be so much more than tying a teddy bear around a vase! The fun colours on this baby owl sitting in his “nest” are a modern take on the traditional. White flowering cherry, genestra and lilac buds form the nest, while the gorgeous green roses and braided steel grass help highlight the focal point.

BPA-free Baby Please
Glass baby bottles are the way to go for today’s health- and environmentally conscious parents as well as using organically and locally grown flowers. The bottles are used to create two separate but joining designs, which is perfect for the increasing number of twins being born. The glass beads naturally weigh down the steel grass and bring the glitter of glass up and into the design.
