Festive and Flower-Free

Flowers have always been a passion for this young and innovative designer. The floral industry has been a part of Tihana Tanasic’s life for over 10 years now. After graduating from the Retail Florist program at Conestoga College, Tihana’s hands-on experience continued as a designer at two local flower shops. As part of her program she competed at numerous design shows such as Flowers Canada and the Tulip Festival. In September of 2007 Tihana opened her 1,400-square-foot storefront in Kitchener, Ont., called The Flower Box, a full-service flower shop that’s embellished with giftware, home décor, and accessories. Tihana’s creative edge and passion for design definitely comes from her European roots. She feels that the always changing and trendsetting European design is the greatest inspiration to stay on the cutting edge of the floral design world. For this design portfolio, Tihana created designs for the holiday season.

Festive and Flower-Free
This ‘flowerless’ design was created in a brown metal box as a base, using monstera, xantal leaves, along with princess pine, B.C. cedar, baby eucalyptus, and ming as the only fresh elements. Lady Amherst feathers become a great accent when using dry lotus pods as a focal point. Preserved Canella berries make up the final element in this long lasting, flower-free, arrangement.

Purple Passion
The inspiration behind this fun and funky creation was definitely the trendiness of purple. The snake grass armature gives the design that extra ‘funk’ element. Monstera, looped aspidistra and cedar were used as a base, and allium, along with mums and a single ostrich feather engrave the colour feature into this design. The whole design sits on a glass cube that’s filled with coloured foam.

The Great White North
This magical creation stands around four feet tall and three feet wide. My inspiration behind this design is solely just a great white Canadian winter. The use of tropical leaves, such as monstera, aspidistra, and japonica was planned to give this piece dimension, depth and interest. Florals used were anthurium, dendrobium orchids, agapanthus, lisianthus, roses and commercial mums. The base is a glass cylindrical vase garnished with an artificial snow garland.

Boughs of Greenery
Six types of greens were used to create this ‘semi traditional’ round table centrepiece. Two red Asiatic lilies stand as a focal point and a colour source for this design. Pine cones wrapped in red aluminum wire and burgundy leucadendron provide the perfect accents and a finish to this budget-conscious creation.
