By Design: Katrina George
katrina

Katrina George, who has always had a love for flowers, started out in the floral department of a grocery store. Next, she got a job with the Grower Direct franchise, where she also did her work experience after graduating in 2007 from the Commercial Floristry program at Olds College in Calgary. Katrina then worked for an independently owned flower shop, Stems Floral Gallery, for almost two years before deciding it was time to pursue what had been a dream for a long time – to begin her own business, Cattleya Chic Inc. She specializes in wedding and event work and has thoroughly enjoyed the first year. Katrina’s goal is to be a successful and relevant designer by continuing to expand her knowledge, by finding new inspiration and also by getting involved – with other businesses, with her community and online. For this Mother’s Day issue, Katrina was inspired by the vibrant tones of the spring season and by simple concept designs for all those Modern Mamas.

Go for a spin
A striking ring of teal in varying shades and textures draws your eye right into the core of the design, which is composed of contrasting white and yellow flowers. The compact design features hydrangea, freesia, roses and, of course, phalaenopsis orchids. Both the size and the strong colours of this arrangement make it a dramatic and beautiful focal piece for a large room, especially if paired with a few complementary accents.

Living art
This very simple piece features a few dramatic blooms of phalaenopsis tucked into a mossy backdrop. It is a wonderful combination of clean modern forms and soft natural elements. The arrangement may be set on a table to be used as a low centrepiece, or can be hung as an interesting piece of living wall art.

Standing strong
This elegant phalaenopsis orchid is in a simple white container with yellow mitsumata sticks for a punch of colour, finished off with reindeer moss and the exposed roots of the orchid, for a natural touch. Plants are a great gift as they are a decent size for a reasonable price and they will last much longer than fresh cut flowers. Plants don’t have to be boring: as designers, we have an endless supply of decorative elements that we can use to make our plants just as beautiful as our arrangements.

Centre of attention
The bold colours demand your attention and the unique textures add visual interest to this whimsical design. The smooth phalaenopsis blooms stand out against the rich background, accentuating their beauty. These stands may be displayed as a trio or in a series for a strong impact, or individually in different areas of the house/workplace. This design can be a green item as it was created from used items, and, if maintained, could be used over again by simply replacing the blooms.
