Shawna McLachlan’s love of floral design began way back in high school when she did a co-op placement with a nearby flower shop. Deciding to pursue an education in musical theatre at Sheridan College took her off track for almost 15 years. The next step was Humber College to study floral design, and she’s been with the industry ever since. McLachlan Floral Design was established in 2001, with the premise of offering high quality flowers and contemporary designs and Shawna still runs the busy shop in Cookstown, Ont. In 2006, the florist was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Floral Design – one of her proudest achievements – and has sat on the board since 2008. Shawna is also a Certified Wedding Coordinator with the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada.

Circle of Life
The circle of life is usually represented in a wreath form; however, here it is displayed as a whole sphere. The willow ball is lightly covered in moss then adorned with white calla lilies. This element is then placed on a bed of potted ivy and white dendrobiums. Once the flowers fade, the ivy remains as a lasting reminder of the loved one who has passed away.
Crossing Over
The cross is a traditional Christian sympathy choice, with clean lines. Here, medium white calla lilies are layered on a bed of light green sisal, in a very symmetrical pattern, allowing a sophisticated yet subdued tribute to a passing. Clear crystal pins add a bit of light and detail to the design.
Living Tribute
This non-traditional casket design is created on a bed of cork, which is cleaner than other tree bark. The coarse texture of the bark allows the elegant choice of flowers – peony, agapanthus, lily, viburnum – to truly be appreciated. The simple, smooth texture of the monstera leaves is a perfect contrast to the whole composition.
