U.S. florists rally for change
July 15, 2011 - Thirty florists in the U.S. have joined forces to create "Florists for Change." The independent group is gathering in Las Vegas on Aug. 17 to discuss the top industry issues in hopes of creating positive change in the floral sector.

The Florist for Change website outlines the goals of the meeting and highlights why they feel change needs to happen right now:

In the current system, non-filling retail florists (order gatherers) add unnecessary costs to the transaction and generate unprofitable orders for the filling florists.  One result may be that some florists might recapture a part of their loss by not filling the order to 100% value, and some may be less apt to replace an order or stand behind the product.  Many shops won't accept incoming orders, of those that do some require 100% of the order value paid immediately by credit card.  This may drive consumers to other forms of gift-giving, with the net result that the entire industry suffers.

This is why we created
Florists for Change. Vital to this effort is obtaining and maintaining critical mass to affect positive change in our industry. The first step is for like-minded florists to meet in Las Vegas at the Cosmopolitan on August 17, 2011, and we ask you to join us. It's a lot to ask, but there is a lot at stake.

The meeting will set the core principles of the group and determine next steps. We are organizing the meeting to be very productive, positive, and inclusive. Share your comments on the site to encourage others. We cannot stress enough the importance of florists getting active in this movement. Success will be directly related to the number of florists who climb on board!

The full meeting agenda and registration information can be found online on the Florists for Change website and you can also learn more about the group through the Florists for Change Facebook group.
