FTD announces 17th annual Good Neighbor Day
Written by Amanda Ryder
FTD is excited to announce the 17th Annual FTD® Good Neighbor Day® event will take place on Wednesday, September 7, 2011. The premise of FTD Good Neighbor Day is simple: florists give every customer a free bouquet of a dozen flowers and ask them to keep one for themselves and give the 11 others away to 11 different individuals. The goal of this one-day event is for FTD Florists to spread goodwill throughout their community and help brighten their local residents’ day with flowers.

FTD Good Neighbor Day is a great way florists can host a low-cost, high impact event that will drive new customers into their shops year-round. The key to a successful event is marketing, and FTD has available for participating florists a proven marketing kit that provides simple step-by-step instructions and tips to ‘get the word out’ about your event. Also, FTD will be heavily promoting the event through an aggressive social media campaign and on FTD.com.

FTD Florists across the U.S. and Canada are highly encouraged to start planning their local events now by securing sponsors and developing philanthropic relationships. These partnerships with community organizations can help increase the exposure and positive impact from the event, as well as off-set the cost and labor efforts. Goodwill efforts such as blood drives and food or clothing collections are commonly held in conjunction with FTD Good Neighbor Day.

"Our shop has participated in FTD Good Neighbor Day for many years and we can attribute new customers and increased sales directly from this event,” commented FTD Florist Rick Samuelson, owner of Judy’s Flowers & Gifts. "Our 2010 Good Neighbor Day was our finest event yet. We collected close to 14,000 lbs of food for our local food banks in cash and non-perishables. We also gave away 10,000 roses in 6 hours…that’s 10,000 new and existing customers that Judy’s Flowers & Gifts reached and encouraged to come back for a future purchase.”

FTD Members who are interested in participating in Good Neighbor Day can receive their free FTD Good Neighbor Day marketing kit online at FTDi.com. The marketing kit provides members with event instructions, marketing materials and templates for media outreach, advertising and public relations efforts. Templates are easy to use and available in Microsoft Word so that members can download, personalize, print and start their outreach.

FTD Good Neighbor Day was started in 1994 by FTD Member the late Brook Jacobs, owner of Greenbrook Flowers in Jackson, MS. The idea behind the holiday is for florists to give away a bouquet of flowers to people in their community encouraging each recipient to keep one for them and hand the others away to make new friends and share kindness to strangers. The goal of the holiday outreach is simply that, to spread goodwill to neighbors and make new friends through the exchange of flowers.
