Feb 2, 2012, Saskatoon, SK - Fred Chlan, AIFD, is featured in today's StarPhoenix newspaper as a returning and rising star in the bustling city's arts community, where his groundbreaking design and penchant for walking barefoot have made him a local celebrity.
A third generation florist, Chlan
inherited his mother's shop in the 1980s and decided Saskatoon wasn't
ready for the work he wanted to do. He "ran away" from Saskatoon and
travelled throughout Europe and Asia before settling in Japan, where he
planted roots for a decade.
"Saskatoon at that time was a place to leave if you had any talent. There was nothing here for you to do," he says.
What drew Chlan home is what brings many back. After a mass exodus of
Saskatchewanians to Alberta and perceived greener pastures, people have
returned in bunches. The booming economy aside, Chlan says there are
other, more powerful reasons Saskatchewan draws artistic,
